The same estate in Scotland, with 2 certificates of confirmation: £351 + 2 × £10 = £371.

Questions people ask

How much is the probate fee in 2026?

In England and Wales the probate application fee is £526 for estates worth more than £5,000, from 13 July 2026. It was £300 before that. Estates of £5,000 or less pay nothing.

How much are extra copies of the grant of probate?

£2 each if you order them with the application, or £16 each later. Banks and other organisations usually want to see an official copy, so ordering several at the start is cheaper.

Do solicitors charge on top of the probate fee?

Yes, if you use one. The court fee is the same whoever applies. Solicitors charge either a fixed fee, an hourly rate or a percentage of the estate for the legal work. Ask for a written estimate and compare at least two.

Is the probate fee the same in Scotland?

No. Scotland uses confirmation instead of probate. The sheriff court charges nothing for estates up to £50,000, £351 for estates from £50,000.01 to £250,000, and £705 above that, from 1 April 2026. Certificates of confirmation ordered with the inventory are £10 each.

Who pays the probate fee?

It is paid when you apply, usually by the executor, and can be repaid from the estate. Some banks will release money from the deceased’s account to pay it.
