How the fees work
In England and Wales each lasting power of attorney is a separate document with its own £92 registration fee: one for property and financial affairs, one for health and welfare. The fee reduction depends on the donor’s income, not the attorney’s.
In Scotland a single power of attorney document can cover both continuing (financial) and welfare powers, and the Office of the Public Guardian (Scotland) charges £99 to register it.
Total = documents × registration fee + documents × solicitor fee × 1.2 (VAT) Worked example
A married couple in Leeds each make both types of LPA online without a solicitor. That is 4 documents at £92, so £368. If one of them earned under £12,000, their two would cost £46 each, bringing the total to £276.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland uses enduring powers of attorney with a different registration process and fee. This calculator does not cover them.
Questions people ask
How much does a lasting power of attorney cost?
It costs £92 to register each LPA in England and Wales. Most people make two, one for property and financial affairs and one for health and welfare, so £184 each. A couple making both pays £368. Making the LPA yourself online is free apart from the registration fee.
Can I get a reduced LPA fee?
If the donor earns less than £12,000 a year before tax, the fee is halved to £46. If they get certain means-tested benefits, they may pay nothing. Donors on Universal Credit are assessed for the reduction, not the exemption. Apply using the form on GOV.UK.
How much does a power of attorney cost in Scotland?
The Office of the Public Guardian (Scotland) charges £99 to register a power of attorney from 1 April 2026. In Scotland a solicitor or a doctor must sign a certificate confirming the granter understands what they are signing, which can add a fee. Some people are exempt from the registration fee.
Do I need a solicitor to make an LPA?
No. You can make one online on GOV.UK. A solicitor is worth considering if the donor’s capacity might be questioned, if family members disagree, or if there are business assets.
What if I make a mistake on the LPA?
The Office of the Public Guardian may let you correct it and apply again within 3 months for £46.
