How the surcharge is calculated
Surcharge = years charged × yearly rate, for each person Years charged come from the visa length. Whole years count as they are. Any part year of 6 months or less adds half a year, and a part year over 6 months adds a full year. So 18 months is charged as 1.5 years, 20 months as 2 years, and 9 months as 1 year.
Worked example
A couple with one child extend their visas from inside the UK for 30 months. That is 2.5 years charged. Each adult pays 2.5 × £1,035 = £2,587.50, and the child pays 2.5 × £776 = £1,940. The total is £7,115.
