How it is worked out
Count back from the date your job ends, one complete year at a time, up to 20 years. Each year is weighted by your age for the whole of that year:
| Your age during the year | Weeks’ pay |
|---|---|
| Under 22 | 0.5 |
| 22 to 40 | 1 |
| 41 and over | 1.5 |
Redundancy pay = total weeks × the lower of your weekly pay and £751 The weekly cap depends on the date your job ends. It is £751 from 6 April 2026 and £719 before that. The calculator picks the right one.
Worked example
Priya was born on 10 May 1980, started on 1 January 2010 and is made redundant on 30 June 2026 on £900 a week. She has 16 complete years. Five of them began when she was 41 or older and count 1.5 weeks each (7.5 weeks). The other 11 count one week each. That is 18.5 weeks.
Her pay is over the cap, so each week counts as £751. 18.5 × £751 = £13,893.50.
Northern Ireland and other limits
This uses the limits for England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland sets its own cap each year, so check nidirect if you work there. Your contract may give you more than the statutory minimum; ask HR for the enhanced redundancy policy.

You get half a week’s pay for each full year you worked while under 22, one week’s pay for each full year aged 22 to 40, and one and a half weeks’ pay for each full year aged 41 or over. Only the most recent 20 years count, and weekly pay is capped.
What is the maximum statutory redundancy pay in 2026?
For redundancies on or after 6 April 2026, weekly pay is capped at £751, so the most anyone can get is £22,530 (30 weeks at the cap). Before 6 April 2026 the cap was £719 a week.
Do I qualify for redundancy pay?
You need to be an employee with at least 2 years’ continuous service with your employer by the date your job ends. Workers who are not employees, some apprentices and people who unreasonably refuse suitable alternative work do not qualify.
Is redundancy pay taxed?
Statutory redundancy pay is tax free up to £30,000, together with any enhanced redundancy or other termination payment. Notice pay and holiday pay in your final pay are taxed as normal.
What counts as a week’s pay?
Your average weekly pay before tax over the 12 weeks before you got your redundancy notice. If your hours or pay vary, use the average. Overtime counts only if your contract requires it.
