CICA compensation calculator
CICA pays a fixed tariff amount for each injury: the full amount for your most serious injury, 30% for the second and 15% for the third. Pick your injuries to see the award the tariff gives before any reductions.
You’ll need a description of your injuries from your medical records or GP, including whether you needed an operation and whether you have made a substantial recovery or still have significant problems.

How CICA works out the award
Every injury in the scheme’s tariff has a level, and each level has a fixed amount. CICA ranks your injuries by value and pays:
| Injury | Share paid |
|---|---|
| Most serious | 100% |
| Second most serious | 30% |
| Third most serious | 15% |
| Any others | Nothing |
Payments for pregnancy or loss of a foetus caused by the crime are paid in full outside this rule. The list in the calculator has the injuries most often claimed after an assault. The full tariff has hundreds of entries, and some injuries, such as sexual offences and patterns of abuse, are compensated differently.
Worked example
After an assault, Daniel loses the sight in one eye (A12, £22,000), fractures a wrist with continuing significant disability (A7, £6,200) and loses a front tooth (A2, £1,500).
He gets £22,000 + 30% of £6,200 (£1,860) + 15% of £1,500 (£225) = £24,085, before any reduction.
Reasons an award can be cut or refused
CICA can reduce or refuse an award if you have unspent criminal convictions, did not cooperate with the police or the prosecution, or if your own conduct contributed to the incident. It covers crimes in England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland has its own scheme.
Questions people ask
How much compensation will I get from CICA?
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority pays a fixed amount for each injury from the tariff in the 2012 scheme, from £1,000 at level A1 up to £250,000. For more than one injury you get the full amount for the most serious, 30% of the second and 15% of the third. Payments can be reduced, for example for unspent criminal convictions.
What is the minimum CICA award?
The lowest tariff level is £1,000. Injuries that do not reach the tariff, such as bruising that heals in a few weeks, are not compensated.
How long do I have to apply to CICA?
Usually within 2 years of the crime. The time limit can be extended in exceptional circumstances, and different rules apply if you were under 18 at the time. The crime must also have been reported to the police as soon as reasonably practicable.
Can I claim for lost earnings?
Only if you have lost the capacity to work, or had very limited capacity, for more than 28 full weeks because of the injury. Loss of earnings is paid at a set weekly rate, not your actual wage. Special expenses, such as some care costs, can also be claimed. This calculator covers the injury payment only.
Can I claim for both a physical and a mental injury?
Yes, if the mental injury is diagnosed by a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist and is disabling. It is treated as one of your injuries under the multiple injury rule, so it gets 100%, 30% or 15% depending on where it ranks.
Do I need a solicitor for a CICA claim?
No. You can apply to CICA yourself for free. Some people use a solicitor or a charity such as Victim Support for complex claims. Solicitors usually take a percentage of the award, so ask for the fee in writing before signing.
